WELCOME TO RUSHMORE ROTARY

Rushmore Rotary is a local club composed of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant social causes to change lives in our community. We were organized in March 1986 and currently have 91 members.  Rushmore Rotary Meetings are held every Tuesday morning at 7am at Elevation Inn & Suites, 950 North Street, Rapid City, SD.  Virtual Zoom meeting logins are available.

We also have an Impact Club, a service-oriented arm of Rushmore Rotary that meets every second and fourth Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Zymurcracy, 4624 Creek Drive #6, Rapid City, SD. This is a good option for anyone who can't make it to a morning meeting.

Si holds a BFA in Theatre from the University of South Dakota. She spent 10 years in Seattle pursuing and developing her craft, also becoming a fitness trainer.
After moving back to Rapid City for much longer than she intended, she played music and performed in “Always Patsy Cline,” eventually starting a Patsy Cline “experience” called InClined.” In 2018, she obtained her BSN in Nursing in from South Dakota State University. After working at Monument Health on the Heart and Vascular unit, COVID unit, then Black Hills Surgical Hospital, she now works with traumatized adolescents at WellFully as their Nurse Coordinator. She’s grateful for the opportunity to be of service and a new member of rotary.
We were visited by Sam Thurston, president of the Hoquiam WA Rotary Club. Thank you for the club flag exchange.

We welcomed back previous member Toni Owan.

Congratulations to Scott Van Dam on receiving his Paul Harris Fellow +6.

Rapid City Alternative Academy Principal Jessica Kanta and Sean Binder updated us on the Academy becoming a discovery school this year. This allows them to find unique pathways to graduation for unique student situations. They also are introducing a Rotary micro grants program. This allows students to apply for up to $1400 toward a need or project with 1 year impacts. This program teaches them grant writing, persuasive communication, project planning, presentation & interview skills. Check out all the great things happening at this awesome school at rcalternativeacademy.rcas.org

Our speakers today were Ruth Conway and Connie Tucker of the Autism Society of the Black Hills. They began here in 1997 to support families affected by autism through education, advocacy and support. The majority of funds raised go towards their summer camp which runs 2-4 hour sessions. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a lifelong developmental condition that typically appears during early childhood and can impact social skills, communication, relationships, and self-regulation. Over the next decade an estimated 700k to 1.1 million Autistic teens will enter adulthood and age out of school-based services. April is Autism Awareness Month. Please wear blue tomorrow, April 2nd in support. For more information visit their website www.autismsd.org.

Rushmore Rotarians volunteered their time yesterday and today with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, an organization that builds beds for kids that sleep on floors because they don’t have a bed.  We sanded wood that we’ll use tomorrow to build beds.   Great work Rotarians!

Our speaker today was Michelle Thomson, President and CEO of Black Hills & Badlands Tourism Association. This great organization has been around for 85 years driving growth and visitation to the Black Hills area. Deborah Kjerstad is a lifelong South Dakotan- raised on a farm near Bear Butte,  graduating from Sturgis HS and then attending Dakota Wesleyan University as a theatre and music major.
She built a 40 year career based out of Rapid City with several retailers as a district manager covering ND, SD, IA, MN and NE with a focus on building teams and developing leaders which led to much success along the way. Her first promotion to DM was with Hallmark cards becoming only the second woman and also one of the youngest DM's in the US and after 8 years was recruited by Limited Brands. During her 20 years there she was certified to be a corporate mentor and coach for district and regional leaders across the country. She left Limited Brands when she was tapped by the Bishop of the United Methodist Church to serve as their newly created Leadership Development Director for the 200 UMC churches of ND and SD. She is most proud of leading Clergy Leadership Academy-a program for new clergy, raising almost $1million in 4 months for a program called Thrive to infuse churches with training and support for creative programs for youth and outreach in their communities, and also for co-authoring and receiving a $1Million Lilly grant aimed at clergy wellness- which she used to create a program called Higher Ground to address the crisis of clergy burnout. Her final 4 working years was as a DM for Starbucks where she opened 8 stores in SD while also leading the Indigenous Partner Network across 9 states- writing grants to the Starbucks Foundation to support efforts in communities around reconciliation and inclusion- including ones for Feeding SD, WAVI, and for the Remembering the Children memorial here in Rapid City.
Within the Rapid City area- she has sung with Dakota Choral Union for 15 years also serving on their board and was president for a term. She also served a term on the Rapid City Arts Council and worked alongside members for many years on the Allied Arts Fund Drive.
Currently "retired"- and enjoying being the part time Tasting Room Manager for Firehouse Wine Cellars.
Deborah has been married to Darrel Kjerstad for 43 years and they have 2 children Lauren, 23 and Nolan 20. (Darla Crown and her husband Doug are their godparents.) Besides loving everything in the arts world-she also enjoys cooking and entertaining, and the beautiful outdoors in the Hills- hiking and camping.
Deb believes in modeling servant leadership and radiating positivity in everything she does-
always admiring the work of Rotary- and attending many fundraisers and events- she is excited to finally be a part of this wonderful organization!
Every day, Rotary members respond to challenges big and small, emerging and ongoing. And when members like you participate through service or with a donation to our Foundation, we make an even bigger impact.

Please donate online or send your contribution by mail to The Rotary Foundation’s Annual Fund-SHARE or one of our Annual Fund's areas of focus. Your gift will support projects like these and make Doing Good in the World possible.

What we say and how we behave matter. Although free expression is important, we must take responsibility for how our words and actions may affect others. The RI Board has approved a new DEI Code of Conduct to help Rotary members create and maintain an environment that is collaborative, positive, and healthy for everyone. Simply put, the DEI Code of Conduct asks you to:

  • Use respectful language
  • Be supportive
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment
  • Celebrate diversity
