Rushmore Rotary is a club composed of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant social causes to change lives in communities.
The Community Action Committee (co-chaired by Dave Dolan and Todd Hyronimus) was formed tofocus resources on smaller service projects that can be quickly organized to meet urgent needs. In this case we found out that a local school needed pencils, so we took action! Remember to bring pencils to the next several meetings for distribution to Robbinsdale Elementary on February 18th following our meeting. We look forward to hearing about future projects!
Let's support this effort by St. Thomas More Interact Club by donating gently used shoes for Soles4Souls.org -- who will distribute shoes to developing countries. A collection box will be available starting February 11, 2020 through end of March. Thanks Sophie Meyers (Jeff's daughter) for sharing this information with our Club.
Our Club has the privilege of recognizing one student in each class (9-12) on a semester basis as "Students of Distinction." Several Rotarians visited RCHS on January 23, 2020 to surprise the students with their awards. The students are nominated by teachers and staff for their academic performance and/or outstanding character. Congratulations Jaiden, Michelle, Vern and Ryan. These students attended our meeting on January 28, 2020 along with Sean Binder (RCHS Coordinator) and principal Shane Heilman. Thank you Cathy Quinlivan for your coordination efforts.
Rotaract - Rushmore Rotary participated in the Kids Against Hunger food pack on Saturday, January 18, 2020 along with SD Mines Rotaract and Black Hills Works. This event was sponsored by District 5610.
Membership - Bruce Nearhood shared that a new membership competition has started. The next generation of Rotarians are looking for experiences and opportunities--so introduce them to our Club meetings, not just events, so they can experience our 7:00 am energy. Make sure that you let Janet Kahler know the name and email address of the person invited for tracking purposes.
International Projects - Pat gave us an update on happenings with this committee. Our club is an international partner for another $7,500 Global Grant to India to build a critical care unit in Indian that will provide 5-7 beds and equipment to a community. We are again assisting in the Program 20 Happy Schools providing basic hygiene items. We should be proud of our global outreach with these efforts.

Multi District President Elect Training (PETS) - March 12-14, 2020 Mayo Civic Center, Rochester, MN - The North Central Presidents-Elect Training Seminar is an annual multi-district training event for incoming Rotary Club Presidents-Elect, and Presidents-Nominee. All are welcome to attend. The registration cost is $245 by January 31 and $270 after January 31. District 5610 President-Elects registration fee will be covered by District 5610. District 5610 Conference - April 24-25, 2020 Hot Springs, SD Friday afternoon, evening and Saturday morning. Tom Gump from Minnesota will be speaking on the first ever Veterans Serving Veterans Rotary Club and will offer a mini-workshop on how to start a cause-based Rotary Club. Jon Ruybalid of Whiteclay Makerspace will be speaking on our first ever effort at a host global grant project. Another presentation will be on our first ever Disaster Response grant to address Pine Ridge Reservation homes damaged by the bomb cyclones of 2019. Look for more conference information in the near future on the district website and for registration and lodging information in February.
Phase 1 of this grant project will support the Rotary District 9700 delegation of young indigenous Australian professionals to Rotary District 5610 (April 2020) to experience a different indigenous culture and to share experiences and connections to demonstrate the way Rotary works towards building understanding, peace and vocational excellence. Phase 2 of this grant project will be to send counterpart Native Tribal Americans to Australia in March 2021, to mirror the experience of the Phase 1 Aboriginal Australians. The Wiradjuri are a major Aboriginal indigenous tribe of southwest Australia.
