Our speaker today was Misty McCallister, Chief Training Officer with the Department of Social Services. She shared with us information on child protective services. She trains staff in SD on DSS guidelines and parameters and to assess each case to see if it meets the threshold of severity for DSS. Pennington County has about 40 social workers with 600 kids in care. She notes that there is a great shortage of foster homes, especially in Western SD, and all their funding is through the State of SD.
