Our speaker today was Skylar Bascom sharing information on the new
West Teen Center in Rapid City. The idea behind the center is to reach teens that don't have anything to do in the afternoon and have little supervision. They will provide mentors to come along side and cheer them on in life and also provide wellness and essential skills classes. The goals of the program are to give the kids belonging and adventure(moving, problem solving, off screen time). They will be staffed with site mentors run by 11th & 12th graders who will help middle schoolers navigate life and learn to be positive citizens. They have building space at Westminster Church and are working on getting grants to take the next steps to train the mentors and open the doors this year.
Thank you for the warm and welcoming invitation to present the goals, vision, and mission for the West Teen Center. Our biggest need is scholarships for the 11th and 12th grade students who I hope to enlist as "Teen Center Champions," as they are trained to conduct after school ministry to students.
